USAMBARA MOUNTAINS

The Usambara Mountains, characterized by grassy plains and pristine tropical rainforest, constitute a breathtaking mountain range. Dotted with vibrant villages, this area offers a plethora of cultural experiences to enrich your visit. Situated in northeastern Tanzania, near Mkomazi National Park, the Usambara Mountains are approximately a three-hour drive (110 km) west of Tanga.
Often considered one of Tanzania's hidden gems, the Usambara Mountains beckon to nature enthusiasts and hikers seeking unspoiled beauty. The verdant slopes of these mountains boast a temperate climate, perfect for leisurely strolls and invigorating hikes. However, the crowning glory of trekking in the Usambara Mountains is undoubtedly the awe-inspiring vistas. From sweeping hills and valleys to lush farmland, quaint villages, bustling markets, and verdant plantations, the panoramic views are truly unparalleled.
Forming the easternmost extent of the Eastern Arc Mountains, the Usambara Mountains stretch for 90 km in length and about half that in width. These majestic formations, sculpted by faulting and uplifting nearly two million years ago, are predominantly composed of Precambrian metamorphic rocks.

Travel Time to Usambara:
  • Approximately a 3-hour drive (110 km) from Tanga
  • Arusha to Usambara: 8 hours
  • Moshi to Usambara: 6 hours
My advice:
  • How long to stay? 2 days
  • Which hotel?
  • EAST – Magoroto Forest Estate (silver)
  • WEST – Mambo View Point (silver)
Best Time to Visit Usambara Mountains:
Although the climate is comfortable year-round, paths become too muddy for trekking during the rainy season from March through May. The best time to visit is from June to October, after the rains when the air is clearest.
